  4.     One of Italy's most famous antiquities is surely its
  5. telephone system. But now AT&T aims to help bring it into the
  6. 20th century. Last week Italtel, an Italian telecommunications
  7. equipment maker, said it has chosen AT&T as its partner in a
  8. five-year, $27 billion government-subsidized mega-project to
  9. rebuild the country's cranky telephone system virtually from
  10. scratch. As one of the main contractors on the project, Italtel
  11. will supply most of the basic equipment, while AT&T will
  12. provide the know-how, software and supercomputers that will make
  13. Italian phone lines hum efficiently. The job may be worth
  14. several billion dollars to Ma Bell.

  16.     The deal, which is expected to be approved by the Italian
  17. government, was a coup for the U.S. firm. AT&T triumphed over a
  18. homegrown bid from Fiat, as well as proposals from French, West
  19. German and Swedish competitors. The Italian project will help
  20. give AT&T a strong foothold in the fast-growing European
  21. telecommunications market. Italtel, for its part, hopes to
  22. parlay its new association into expanded phone-equipment
  23. exports.
